Gone are the ornate liveries of the "Southern"
tragically replaced by the rather unimaginative colours

Details:
The Bournemouth Belle train service was first
inaugurated by the Southern Railway in 1931 and operated
until nationalisation in 1948 with the service being
postponed during the Second World War. However, after
1948 the service was subsequently operated by British
Railways until withdrawal on the 9 July 1967.
Initially
the service operated out of Waterloo Station calling at
Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth but was later
amended so that it terminated at Bournemouth West. This
Hornby Bournemouth Belle pack features a BR Britannia
Class locomotive, "Alfred the Great", plus three 12
wheel Pullman Cars simulating part of the service as it
would have been seen in the early 1950s. An additional
pack containing three further 12 wheel Pullman cars is
also available to extend the train.

The Last Single Wheeler LMS (Ex

Details:
Designed in part by Dugald Drummond who was the Chief
Engineer of the Caledonian Railway and built as a
solitary example of its class by Neilson & Co in 1886,
the 4-2-2 saw extensive service in the late 19th Century
when operating the express service between Carlisle and
Edinburgh, known at the time as "Race to Scotland".
After the
First World War the 4-2-2 locomotive was reserved for
hauling the director’s coach but in 1930 after acquiring
the Crimson Lake livery of the LMS the locomotive
reverted back to ordinary traffic working local train
services between Perth and Dundee making it the last
Single Wheeler to work in traffic in the British Isles.

The Stack Heart of Midlothian

Details:
The Stack Heart of Midlothian Train Pack. This pack
includes BR (early) class A4 60025 'Falcon,' 2 Mk1
(carmine and cream) composite coaches, Mk1 (carmine and
cream) brake coach. This afternoon service from London
Kings Cross to Edinburgh, Waverley and vice versa
commenced in the early years of the 20th Century, with
the journey taking over 8 hours with five stops on the
northern journey and 7 on the down service. Over the
years the journey times were improved upon and although
the start times were altered slightly during the dark
days of World War 2, the service continued. The service
was rejuvenated in 1951 as part of the Festival of
Britain celebrations with the train's journey being
extended to Perth. The locomotive and coaches contained
in this pack are representative of the train as it would
have been seen in the early half of the 1950's.

The Stack Red Dragon Train Pack

The Stack Red Dragon Train Pack. The Red Dragon service
was inaugurated on 5th June 1950 and was a morning
service which although part of the train started its
journey from Carmarthen, the main section of the service
operated out of Swansea journeying to London, Paddington
with the train returning in the late afternoon but not
arriving at Carmarthen until a few minutes before
midnight!
The exGWR Castle Class locomotive accompanies the BR
liveried GWR coaches in this pack and is a suitable
representation of a section of the Red Dragon train
which would have been seen leaving Swansea Station in
the early 1950s on its journey to London.

"Kingfisher" heading into Peterborough pulling a rake of

Barry J. Freeman only saw one
streamlined "Coronation" and this was when he was a
young boy eagerly train spotting one sunny afternoon,
however the image remained with him when he was asked to
create a painting depicting "City of Chester" in the LMS
lined crimson lake livery under a full head of steam as
it tackled the long climp up to Shap summit he jumped at
the chance. The time period for this painting is Autumn
1939 only a month or so after the locomotive had first
entered traffic.

Production Details:
The Somerset & Dorset had a rather
complicated history but after1948 the line basically
remained unchanged until closure in 1966. In 1951 which
is the subject of the painting, one of "Bullied's "West
Country" Class pacifics ran a series of trials over the
line. Chilcompton Tunnel was the back drop for this
painting where "Dorchester" can be seen pulling a rake
of exLMS coaches out of the tunnel avoiding a grass fire
that had started on the nearside. A group of permanent
way workers can be seen waiting for the train to pass so
that they can asses the situation.
