D-Type was driven to victory in the famous 1955 20-Hours of Le Mans race by
future Formula One World Champion Mike Hawthorn. The D-Type was built for
racing and was the first race car to adopt a monocoque chassis; introducing
aircraft-style engineering to motorsport
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR
was based partly on the technology of the successful Grand Prix car. It also
had the body of a road racer. The 300 SLR became the most successful racing
sports car by securing major victories for Mercedes in 1955.
