Airfix - Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina Flying Boat -
1:72 (A05007)
The superb amphibious ‘Cat’ entered service in 1939 and was immediately
successful in its various roles. The type from 209 squadron spotted the
Bismarck during the famous action in the Denmark Strait in 1941. Weaknesses
such as a slow flying speed, lack of crew armour and no self-sealing tanks,
led to more suitable roles for the “Cat”. Coinciding with the development of
effective radar, and Japanese reliance on night transport led to the
development of the “Black Cat Squadrons.”
