The LMS Class 4P Compound steam locomotives had a wheel arrangement of 4-4-0 and were designed for hauling passenger trains. A total of 195 engines were constructed between 1924 and 1932 by the LMS Derby Works, LMS Horwich Works, North British Locomotive Company, and the Vulcan Foundry. These locomotives were almost identical to the MR Class 1000, of which there were 45 of the class. It was decided that the driving wheel diameter should be reduced in size from the MR engines. Each locomotive was withdrawn from service between 1952 and 1961, with none surviving into a preservation status.

The ‘B17’ Class was also known as either the ‘Sandringham’ Class or the ‘Footballer’ Class, depending on which name it carried. Designed by Nigel Gresley for passenger services on the Great Eastern Main Line, 73 were built between 1928 and 1937, 52 of them at the LNER’s Darlington Works and the remainder supplied by private builders North British in Glasgow and Robert Stephenson & Co. in Newcastle. Built as No. 2852 in 1936, it became 61652 under BR and is one of the ‘Footballers’, carrying the crest of Darlington Football Club and a football beneath its nameplate. It is finished in BR Green with the late crest on the tender. They operated in their original parallel boiler form until rebuilt with tapered boilers under William Stanier between 1946 and 1949. No. 5540 ‘Sir Robert Turnbull’ is in an LMS Crimson Lake livery. It is named after Robert Turnbull who served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Engineer and Railway Staff Corps and who also served the LNWR as its General Manager. He was knighted in 1913. The ‘County’ Class was the last of the GWR-designed two-cylinder 4-6-0s, with 30 built at Swindon between 1945 and 1947 to the design of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Frederick Hawksworth. ‘County of Dorset’ entered service in February 1946 and spent most of its early years in the West Country at Bristol, Plymouth, Truro and Penzance, before transferring to Shrewsbury in December 1951. Introduced to a design by Nigel Gresley for the Great Northern Railway in 1920, 1744 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in February 1921. At the Grouping two years later, it became LNER 4744 and then 9523 under the 1946 renumbering scheme, before finally becoming BR 69523 at nationalisation. Withdrawn from New England shed, Peterborough in September 1962, it was purchased by the Gresley Society Trust for preservation the following year. It has been based variously at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, the Great Central Railway and – most recently – the North Norfolk Railway, where, following a major overhaul, it is set to return to steam in time to celebrate ‘Gresley 150’ during 2026.. Hornby RailRoad British Steel Class 37 Teesside Steelmaster 37501. Built by English Electric at its Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on started life in January 1961 as D6705, going new to Stratford depot in London. After becoming 37005 under TOPS, it was rebuilt as a Class 37/5 in April 1985, which included replacing its EE generator with a new Brush unit, and a complete re-wire, with a consequent renumbering to 37501. It was then painted into its distinctive British Steel pale blue colour scheme, gaining Thornaby Kingfisher motif and British Steel logos.
