Hornby BR Maunsell Coaches British Railway

When the Southern Railway was formed in 1923, it continued to build coach designs inherited from the main three constituent companies. Richard Maunsell introduced the SR’s first ‘standard’ coaches, building over 1,200 of them. These were formed into 139 sets, as it was the SR’s practice to keep coaches together for long periods of time, with a set number at each end. Hornby Southern Railway (SR) 58' Maunsell Rebuilt (Ex-LSWR 48’)

By 1934, the Southern Region recognised that the short 48’ ex-LSWR stock was in need of some major attention as it was nearing the end of its working life. Much of it was built on wooden underframes, whilst some was still gas lit and so a programme of refurbishment was proposed and undertaken under Works Order (HOO No.) L801 of March 1934 and Works Order (HOO No.) L852A of March 1935.

The 58’ stock to diagrams 99 and 418 were created in 1935/1936 at Lancing Works, by taking the 48’ Composite body, cutting it and fitting to a 58’ Maunsell underframe. In the case of the Brakes, a 10’ guards van was grafted to one end, these were steel panelled, which didn’t quite match the finish of the rest of the wooden panelled bodywork. The composites (to diagram 31) differ, in that the original 48’ body was cut into two sections and mounted at each end of the underframe, with a 10’ section being inserted comprising a single compartment, with two lavatories (side by side). The defining feature of all these ‘new’ vehicles was the triangular section weatherboard that ran the length of the body, disguising the join (the 48’ body being narrower than the 58’ underframe).

Hornby Collet Coaches

Charles B. Collett developed a new range of standard coaches from 1922 to coincide with the reintroduction of the chocolate and cream livery onto the company’s network. These covered a wide variety of types, but the most common type introduced between 1925 and 1929 was the ‘bow-ended’ corridor coach, of which several hundred were built at Swindon. The idea of the ‘bow ends’ was to reduce the length of the corridor connections between carriages following complaints from nervous passengers about walking across them when the train was travelling at speed. They went on to form the backbone of main line sets for 20 years

Upon the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 an agreement was made to carry mail on the railway. A royal mail coach would be placed on the end of a train with a guard seated high up on a special seat at the back of the coach keeping a watchful eye. As the first specifically designed Mail Coach to be used on a railway, it paved the way for a long-standing relationship between railways and the mail. In the style of an old horse drawn carriage, our Royal Mail coach model emulates mail travel from the 1800s. It sports an L&MR red and black livery. A crew figure (coachman) can be seated at the back on your layout to keep a watchful eye on the mail. The accessory bag contains two chain couplings and a coachman figure.
