When it comes to operating distinctive aeroplanes at
sea, the Royal Navy have had more than their fair share of aircraft
types, but perhaps the strangest looking (and sounding) was the Fairey
Gannet. During the summer of 1950, a Gannet became the first
turboprop-powered aircraft in the world to land on the deck of an
aircraft carrier, and production deliveries of the most heavily produced
AS.1 variant of the aircraft began in 1954. The Gannet also saw service
with the navies of Australia, West Germany and Indonesia, but it was the
Royal Navy who were the last to retire ‘in service’ examples of this
rugged naval aircraft type.
